Created in 2005, AquaFed is the International Federation of Private Water Operators. AquaFed represents more than 400 private operator providing water and sanitation services in more than 40 countries worldwide. According to GWI (2013), over 1 Billion people count on private operators to serve them on a daily basis.

AquaFed is a non-profit organization ruled by Association 1901 status (France) and a Code of Ethics.

AquaFed is governed by its Members through an annual General Assembly, at which they appoint the President, the Executive Committee and determine the organization's objectives and strategies.

AquaFed’s President is directing the Executive Committee that is responsible for:

- Developing the Federation’s positions on the world’s water challenges.
- Overseeing the pursuit of the Federation’s objectives

## The Secretariat

The secretariat is based in Paris and Brussels, and supports the Federation’s missions. The multicultural team is comprised of water professionals with significant field experience.  The team relies on a worldwide network of industry colleagues and works in close cooperation with national and corporate members. 

Within the membership, AquaFed secretariat coordinates federation thematic working groups on PPP and Performance, Rights to water and to sanitation, Water quality and benchmarking, the 2030 goals.

Over the years, the Federation secretariat has been active on all continents and in all main water related conferences and involved in international discussion on water issues.

The President and Executive Director are responsible for administrating AquaFed on a day-to-day basis

AquaFed membership is open to all private companies that are active in public water and/or wastewater service management through contracts, joint-ventures or licenses with public authorities. It is also open to other companies active in the water sector.

Members

AquaFed’s main action aims at:

- Connecting private water operators with all stakeholders engaged at the international level on water services and challenges:
- International organisations (UN, OECD, etc.)
- Public authorities
- Civil society (researchers, academics, experts, NGOs, journalists, etc.)
- Advocating for the benefits of public-private partnerships as an option in managing water and sanitation services for public authorities and consumers, depending on the local context.
- Promoting the role of water and sanitation in 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the realisation of human rights.
- Improving the water industry and solving issues: AquaFed is sharing the expertise of the private operators and is working with the international community to identify solutions to address world’s water issues.
- Providing information and counsel: AquaFed aims at being a reliable source of information on private operators’ contributions for all stakeholders interested in water and sanitation services.

Accreditations:

- AquaFed is one of the few representatives of the water business community to have these accreditations, which makes the federation a preferred partner to promote water issues
- AquaFed is an [NGO with special Consultative status](http://esango.un.org/civilsociety/showProfileDetail.do?method=showProfileDetails&profileCode=7534&locale=en) at the United Nations ECOSOC (since July 2011)
- AquaFed is [registered](http://ec.europa.eu/transparencyregister/public/consultation/displaylobbyist.do?id=09175433167-27) in the joint voluntary transparency register of the European Commission and the European Parliament
- AquaFed representatives are accredited to the European Parliament
